Why do they recommend throwing oregano down the drain and what are the benefits?

Sometimes, the kitchen sink drain is a source of bad odours, either because it is slightly clogged or because of food scraps left there. A tip has gone viral on social media that, until now, was not on the list of options for dealing with the situation: throw oregano down the drain. A solution with baking soda and vinegar; hot water and soap; coarse salt and lemon juice or natural enzymatic cleaning products are some of the best-known alternatives, according to an article in La Vanguardia.

There are also chemical products designed to eliminate bad odours and remove residues using activated carbon. These cleanings should be carried out once a month as a preventive measure. But lovers of natural solutions have made dried oregano, the same used to season pizzas, sauces and meats, go viral as a powerful and economical solution for cleaning drains.

Oregano: antibacterial and aromatic

The reason why oregano is effective in keeping drains clean lies in two of its compounds, carvacrol and thymol. These are two natural substances with antimicrobial properties which, according to several studies, help to eliminate bacteria and fungi. When they come into contact with hot water, these substances are released and produce a disinfectant and aromatic effect. Simply place a small handful of dried oregano in the sink drain, leave it to sit for a few minutes, and rinse with hot water. The idea is to take advantage of the antibacterial and aromatic properties of the spice to neutralise unpleasant odours and prevent the proliferation of bacteria.

The main benefits of oregano in this proposal are:

  • Neutralises odours.: Oregano has a strong scent that can mask bad smells from pipes.
  • Antibacterial properties. Many experts and several studies point out that oregano contains compounds that help fight bacteria and fungi.
  • Natural solution. It is an alternative to chemical products, ideal for those looking for more environmentally friendly options.

Oregano method for improving sinks

The steps to effectively combat bad odours from kitchen sinks with oregano are as follows:

  1. Heat the water until it is almost boiling.
  2. Pour a tablespoon of dried oregano into the drain.
  3. Pour the hot water slowly so that the leaves do not accumulate or get stuck on the sides of the pipe.
  4. Wait a few minutes and rinse with more tap water. This will give you an aromatic and disinfectant effect without the risk of causing blockages.

Although this solution is economical and environmentally friendly and has many fans, plumbing experts warn that it should be used in moderation (once or twice a month), as the dried oregano leaves do not dissolve completely and can accumulate in the siphon or pipe joints. Over time, this can clog them. They add that this method does not eliminate the real cause of bad odours (they will be ‘masked’ for a long time), which in most cases come from grease, food or accumulated dirt. Therefore, it is recommended to first clean the area thoroughly and then apply this simple technique.
