Mixing bay leaves and baking soda: what it is used for and why it is recommended

There is growing awareness in society about avoiding the use of chemical products for cleaning the home, which means turning to natural remedies that, contrary to popular belief, are in most cases more effective. In this case, we must highlight the mixture of bay leaves and bicarbonate of soda, two products that can be found in every kitchen and can also be used to keep the house clean, odour-free and with a natural scent that lasts for several days.

Baking soda is known to be an excellent natural deodoriser and for its ability to clean surfaces without scratching them. Bay leaves, on the other hand, provide a fresh aroma and contain a number of compounds that are essential for fighting bacteria and fungi. However, by combining the two, you can enjoy a mixture that has multiple interesting uses, including cleaning surfaces. It can be used as a cleaner for tiles, countertops, bathtubs, etc., and is ideal for removing stubborn stains and grease.

It will also be very useful for eliminating bad odours. Simply place crushed bay leaves together with bicarbonate of soda in an open container and place it in cupboards, the refrigerator or near the rubbish bin, as they have a great capacity to absorb unpleasant odours and leave a fresh scent in the room. Similarly, you can prepare a cloth bag with the mixture and place it inside drawers to prevent clothes from acquiring unpleasant odours and, at the same time, repel insects. Finally, remember that they can be used to fragrance rooms. To do this, simply burn a few bay leaves on bicarbonate of soda in a heat-resistant container or, if you don’t have one, place the mixture near radiators or heaters to naturally perfume the room.

To prepare this mixture, start by drying 5-6 bay leaves to prevent mould from forming, then grind them into powder or small pieces. In a bowl, mix the ground bay leaves with two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda. Store the mixture in a container with a lid so that it stays dry and ready to use when needed. To use the mixture as a deodoriser, place a tablespoon of the mixture in a cloth bag and place it in the refrigerator, cupboard or near the rubbish bin, changing it every 2-3 weeks. To use it as a surface cleaner, simply sprinkle the mixture on the surface to be cleaned, then scrub with a damp cloth and rinse with clean water.

On the other hand, it is a perfect combination to use as an air freshener, leaving the mixture in an open container in bedrooms, cupboards or bathrooms and renewing it from time to time so that the aroma remains intense. In addition to all this, it is important to remember that bay leaves are a great ally for health due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, thanks to compounds such as flavonoids and tannins that combat oxidative stress and inflammation, strengthening the immune system. They also have digestive properties and can help relieve nasal congestion due to their expectorant properties.
