Experts recommend “smart” home heating: the ideal temperature for each room

How to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home without increasing your electricity bill: recommended temperatures for each room.

The cold has arrived in all Spanish homes and, with it, the question of what temperature to set the heating to, since, for example, 21 degrees may be too low for some, while for others it is too high.

Experts in technological efficiency assure us that a single temperature no longer meets today’s demands for modern comfort and energy efficiency.

In the 1970s, a standard of 19º was established, although this was determined more by economic considerations than by the optimum temperature for comfort. It should be noted that homes at that time were very different from those of today.

Nick Barber, an expert in energy management, has pointed out that this figure ‘was set based on savings rather than comfort’.

The perfect temperature today

Experts agree that 20 degrees is the benchmark for the main rooms where we spend most of our time.

Specialist Brad Roberson comments that the feeling of thermal comfort ‘is complex and depends on multiple factors beyond temperature, such as humidity, air circulation, level of physical activity and clothing’.

Recent studies have confirmed that by maintaining the temperature at 20 °C, the human body better maintains the ideal temperature of 37 °C, which is very important for activities such as reading or teleworking.

Smart heating

However, what experts advocate most is what is known as ‘smart heating’, which consists of keeping each room at a temperature appropriate for the function for which it is to be used.

For the living room and spaces where we spend most of our time, the ideal temperature is 20 °C, while bedrooms can be kept between 16 and 18 °C, which promotes a more restful sleep.

It is recommended to keep the bathroom at 22°C to avoid a large change in temperature when getting out of the shower. According to experts, adjusting the temperature in each room of the house not only improves well-being, but can also lead to substantial savings on your electricity bill.

These systems can help you save up to 15% on your annual heating bill, while helping to ensure an optimal level of comfort.
